Tous les deux ou trois ans, ce livre me hante. One can only be touched by this first love, pure, overflowing and unhappy, for ravaged by sickness and the oppressive presence of death. This is stil written under the influence of Sartre and Beauvoir and Camus on a side note: Boy loves girl and girl loves boy in a world where no hell can break loose, for it was never restrained in the first place.
And they walk along in their own little cloud, watching the other passers-by and looking in the shop windows. All three things Vian hates!

My internet research suggests that the earliest of these, “Froth on the Daydream” by Stanley Chapman, may be preferable, though judging the calibre of literary translation is a tricky game at best. It’s like painting the most beautiful picture using the brightest colors just to set it on fire before you can even admire it.
I should also add that the Stanley Chapman translation is highly impressive, as this may be among the most difficult works ever to confront a translator.
