The “direction” DIP switch is set such that movement of the nose of the model to the left counter clockwise causes the gyro to supply a right tail rotor command to the servo.

Make sure the guides are aligned for least resistance. A better choice for non computerized radios or if you are lacking a spare channel for remote gain would be the Futaba GY or the E-flite G90 for smaller helis. Now that you’re done with that, you need to flip the GEAR switch manuwl to heading hold mode. This point is critical. This gives HH when the switch is up. This is very simple, nothing special here, just connect the rudder servo to the female connector.

If it is dry and tacky this will cause the problem.

This will make the nose of the helicopter rotate to the right. Proper trim can and should manuual obtained mechanically by adjusting the tail rotor pushrod. Speaking of servos, the came in two different packages. The cushioning is done inside the gyro. You cannot use this to prevent linkage binding. Check the servo direction.

The Futaba GY Gyro

On my gy that came with the servo I have found 84 is what it took. Yes, the tape that comes with the gyro is not very cushiony, but that’s the way it needs to be. Lets take a look at this latest “SAFE” inspired version to help you decide if it’s worth adding to the…. I did this so as to stop the resistance the rod had on the front frame guide due to being pulled down to the servo. Remember that a few hundred rpm drop on the head is several hundred rpm drop on the tail. The rudder input lead for the gyro is plugged into the rudder channel slot in the receiver.

Is it worth adding to your fleet? As you can see in the picture to the left, I mounted it with the cords coming out toward the back of the helicopter. Back to Main Page. Set the tail lever so that an imaginary line drawn from the two screws is parallel to the tail shaft. Make the connections just as shown in the manual picture to the left comes from the manual.

This value rarely causes the tail to “hunt” on first hovering flights. This gyro initializes fast, only yy401 3 or 4 seconds. The delay trimmer should remain at 0.

As mentioned, the GY supported both slower analog tail rotor servo pulse rates or can be switched to a Hz high frequency rate for fast tail rotor specific digital servos. In the old days, we ran as much gain as possible without having the tail “hunt” or “wag”.

Manual GY401

Move the manaul stick to the right and watch the servo arm. That is the difference between one value having a positive value and the other a negative value. The gyro channel reverse setting in the radio can be used if you want the switch in the opposite direction it currently is in just depends on if you want the switch up or down all the time.

If it’s not, turn the link clockwise to move it toward the back or counter clockwise to move it forward. The distinction is important to recognize as the proper use of the AFR function will ensure no drifting problems occur with the gyro.

Quick Start Guide for the GY401

The RPM’s should be to for 3D flight. I leave mine in HH all the time. The servo needs to rotate clockwise. I also use a JR Ball link resizing tool to remove unecessary resistance from the ball links.

Once ideal trim is obtained, land the model.

Team Futaba Tip #2

It avoids the use of any preprogrammed gyro software, because many months of following posts and questions on the various web forums has proven that those software menus sometimes produce more confusion than the set up about to be detailed.

I have my tail servo mounted up front and I added a slight bend gy410 the front section so the link is at the same height as the ball on the servo arm. The tape works great, use it.

My RC Helicopter eBooks are here to help you with those exact problems. Further adjustments are rarely kanual as most pilot fly in ACVS mode all the time.

Using the limit trimmer pot on the gyro, adjust the tail rotor travel as needed for no binding at extremes of throw. Tail wags only right after a pirouette, or anytime I move the tail then stop. To get the tail to move faster or slower, adjust the rudder channel travel. Make certain left and right inputs are checked, because many helicopters have asymmetrical tail rotor pitch change mechanisms.

Wait 4 seconds for the gyro to initialize. Even the best conventional analog and digital servos that Futaba produces pale in comparison to the performance achieved when the gyro is paired with the or servo tail rotor servo. If the servo moves to one direction but does not move back to center then you are in heading hold mode which is right.

Also make sure the trims are centered. Inhibit all preprogrammed gyro software in the transmitter. Do not disturb the trim in the radio.
