As I was reading it dawned to me that just like the characters in the story, most of the time we took things for granted; or that we did not take things seriously enough.
While I was disturbed by the sheer brutality of the murder and the blase attitude that the characters have in handling Nasar’s dead body, and anxious over the uncertainty of what led to the crime, I was astounded by the revelation of what could be done to avoid the death of one man who may or may not have done what he was accused of.
But no one did anything to stop it. Santiago’s murder is merely the event around which the entire character of the town is put into relief. Thanks for telling us about the problem.
